Dream Big: The Inspiring Story of Chris Dudley: An American Hero

Introduction

There are few stories of determination and perseverance equivalent to that of Chris Dudley. Born February 22, 1965 and diagnosed with type 1 16 years later, Dudley was faced with many challenges growing up. But, in spite of them all, he went on to play 886 NBA games and to eventually become known for his incredible work with diabetic athletes of all ages.

Chris Dudley Part 1: High school to the NBA

Chris Dudley grew up in a prominent family in the 1960s 70s and he began to play basketball when he went to high school. When he was 16 years old, Chris was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In general, doctors and medical professionals had a very negative view of diabetes at the time. Dudley did not despair after his diagnosis, however, but rather he continued to play basketball through high school and he was eventually drafted to play at Yale University.

There weren’t many college athletes with T1D when Dudley entered Yale, so this in itself was an accomplishment. Though Dudleys teammates were at first skeptical of his diabetes, he soon demonstrated that he could play basketball at a professional level with his T1D.

Dudley made history 3.5 years later in 1987 when he became the first person to play in the NBA with T1D. He has said that during his professional career he was motivated by his desire to prove that someone with diabetes was capable of playing professional sports as well as anyone. A relative scarcity at that time.

Dudley began to be open about his diabetes about three years into his career. He began to speak and teach about what it was like to live with diabetes, as well as how he used diet and exercise to control his blood sugar. Something he continues to do to this day.

With one of the most impressive careers in the history of basketball, Dudley played for over sixteen years on various teams and scored an impressive 3473 points.

Chris Dudley Part 2: Beyond the NBA

In 1994, Chris and his wife founded the Chris Dudley foundation. The foundation is actively serving the diabetic youth community through outreach programs and summer camps. Their foundation mission is “To empower and inspire all people with diabetes to live active and dream big”. One thing he teaches at his camps is that the capabilities of someone with diabetes are limitless. He says that we should all dream big and then follow our dreams. Something he exemplified in his own life.

To this day his foundation hosts a summer basketball camp for teens with T1D. Young diabetic athletes are offered a chance to learn about proper diet from various experts.

Chris heavily emphasizes the importance of dreaming big especially with diabetes. Chris constantly is seeking new ways to raise awareness for T1D today. He is an adamant advocate for improving diabetes care technology. Some devices which he personally uses and promotes are the cgm and insulin pump.

Chris tells his story today because he wants to inspire and educate others about diabetes. I find this personally inspiring because I share I similar desire.

Conclusion: Dream Big: The Inspiring Story of Chris Dudley: An American Hero

Despite his diagnosis, Chris performed on a high level in the world of sports. Through patience, perseverance, and determination, Dudley overcame the obstacles in his path. He is a hero to all people living with diabetes. Dudley faced the cards dealt to him with bravery.

I hope by reading the story of Chris Dudley you may now feel some of the determination to thrive which motivated him to overcome countless obstacles. I myself am grateful to Chris and others like him who persevere and thereby inspire others to do the same. May we all have the discipline to never quit, regardless of what we face.
