Who I am
Hi! My name is Elijah Waycaster, I am the author and creator of Running With Diabetes, a blog for anyone living with diabetes who is ready to take control of their health. I am a sixteen year old runner from western North Carolina and I have been a diabetic for nearly a decade. I am passionate about health and wellness and sharing my experiences with others.
In the summer of 2023 I was living like the average American teenager. Heedless of my diabetes and overall health, I would often indulge in candies, diet soft drinks, and a variety of other comfort foods. The byproduct of this was that I often found myself feeling depressed and uncomfortable. Then something amazing happened….
Somebody told me the truth…They told me that I was an amazing person and that I was made for more. That I was more than average and that I could be anything and anyone I chose, so long as I was willing to put in the work.
This is where my journey really began. I now had a reason to take care of my body and own my health. I began to slowly change my diet and incorporate good habits into my routine like yoga, cold plunging, learning by reading educational books, and seeking excellence in every area of my life. At first the results were slow, but then they started to compound and I suddenly found myself living the life I worked so very hard for.
Within a couple months after what I would call my decision, I ran my first half marathon at 1:47:00. I absolutely loved it. I continued to train and in another nine months I ran my first marathon. Although I could barely walk for a few days afterwards, I really enjoyed the challenge.
I continue to train and run all kinds of races, and my passion for health and wellness is stronger now than ever.
I have created this blog because I want to be able to inspire others in the same way that I was inspired.
What kind of content can you expect?
Every Monday and Thursday I will publish a new post about one or several of the following topics…
- Mindset. How to build mental fortitude and discipline, as well as maintaining good mental health during training and life.
- Diabetes. I will share what I have learned about T1D over the past ten years. What to do, what not to do, and everything in between.
- Running. Training tips tailored for beginner to intermediate runners and diabetic athletes.
- Habits and goals. Routine is a huge part of any sport and running is no exception. Learn to build the life you want so you can live the life you want.\
My goal is to inspire, encourage, and educate. I believe that with the right mindset and practices, diabetes can become a blessing rather than a curse. This is something I have experienced in my own life and I hope you will as well.
